Agency Growth Is Really All About You

You are your agency – it’s your vision, personality, and hard work that has gotten you to where you are. Clients hire you!

Agencies have many similarities, opportunities, and challenges. It’s you that makes your agency – that makes you special and different.

I am often asked what hasn’t work in my consulting – candidly, it’s either agency principals who either are unwilling to takes risk, or make changes, or just don’t have the time to execute/implement.

The key is learning from others who understand your business and have been in your shoes. Someone who gets the communications industry you play in and “gets” agency challenges/opportunities. It’s all about knowing what you don’t know and being willing to learn from others.

Being successful requires knowing how all the elements of your agency successfully integrate (finance, business development, operations, HR, legal, etc.). Most agency principals are really strong in one or more functions, but they don’t have the expertise/knowledge in certain others. Most are entrepreneurs with either a creative or technology background. What may be missing is the financial or business background – remember, you are not the Salvation Army; it’s about building value and making money.

Unfortunately, you are doing everything – spreading yourself around and not focusing on what you do best. So the big question is, how to scale if everything requires you? You may have done well and your agency may be busy. But, what does the future look like? Have you considered an exit strategy? What’s possible? This is where building for Future State is critical. It is that long-term plan that matters – integrating People, Customer, and Enterprise Strategies

What works for one agency doesn’t necessarily work for others, and any recommendation is based on numerous variables. Any good consultant will focus on you – what makes you and your agency special/different?

There are numerous strategies and tactics that can be proposed, but unless we know what makes you tick, and what resources we have to work with, it is foolhardy to provide any specific point of view.
